Well, I'm back from the north, and I'm being drafted this sunday.

New week, new life, I guess. Wish me luck.

The north was amazing. We boarded in a zimmer at Rosh Pina, one of israel's oldest zionist settlments (unlike Jerusalem or Jaffa, which were founded long before zionism was even conceived).
Other than hiking some amazing tracks, like the Yahudia

and coming back to a view much like this one each evening
,
I had some pretty interesting experiences.

I was walking through the oldest part of Rosh Pina one evening, between ancient Crusader cellars and 19th century stone buildings, when a leather workshop caught my attention.
Walking in, and examining the hand made sandals, vests, hats and guitar coverings while ancient greek music played in the background, I was approached by the old shopkeeper.
"Do you play?" He asked, pointing in the direction of the Ouds, Lutes and guitars.
"A bit. Not professionaly, anyway." I answered.
"In that case, please, come sit down with us," He said with a knowing smile that seemed odd to me at the time.
He took me to a little garden/stone court behind the shop, where a young couple, in their mid twenties, was sitting by a rickety wooden table, drinking freshly made tea from local herbs from an oriental looking iron container, listening to the strange music coming from inside the shop.
I helped myself to some tea, settled back and let my attention drift from the shopkeeper's stories of his time as a sea fairing man to the music to the loving looks the couple exchanged.
After a while, the person who made up the masculin half of the couple looked at me and said, casually,
"Oh, yeah, I know you. You used to attend the Israeli scouts in palo alto ten years ago, didn't you?"
I blinked.
"yeeaahhhh...? How did you know?"
"Oh, I used to be a group leader there once. You were in the fourth grade, weren't you?"
"Yes..Yeah. I was. heh. What a coincedence."
"I used to get really excited when things like this happened to me, but I've gotten used to it now. It's been happening quite a lot. I can sense that things like this have happened to you as well."
"Yeah, they have. So, how've ya been?"

After we said our hellos, I noticed the shopkeeper was still smiling his knowing smile.

When the greek music stopped, the shopkeeper went back in to to the shop and came back out carrying what could only have been a hand made xylophone, and treated us to a very unique form of music.

After a while, we all had to leave,
but I still can't forget the shopkeeper's smile.
