Haha! So true! And parents are always asleep when you're already awake. Well, at least in my house.

yep!
when i was a kid, every sabbath morning i'd get up and wake my parents by jumping on their bed, after I strolled through the kitchen and watched television in the cozy, silent house.

mm.

no, seriously, this dates back to probably before the spain banishment, since jews from north africa and yemen do it as well as jews from europe (east, centre and west).

i didnt realize that it was such an old tradition! maybe it dates back to before the destruction of teh 2nd Temple then...b/c the jews from yemen werent affected by the spanish inquisition.

not talking about the inquisition

most of the jews were banished from spain a few hundred years before the inquistion, and fled to the rest of europe, yemen, and north africa.

A laptop is okay???

Hm.

Well it all certainly looks peaceful and restful and VERY NEAT AND ORGANIZED AND CLEAN, crist almighty.

I guess I've no jewish ancestry after all; I'm too much of a slob for it.
*sigh*

But seriously:
yay sunflowers!
and wooden chairs!

And cool candlesticks :)

Thank you very much for sharing this.

And I notice what looks like sunny daylight..[*anguished cry* reaches-out-toward-picture]

You lucky.
We haven't really seen the sun in a month.

[coughs up mildew]

nah, i'm a slob.
a laptop isn't ok if you're a shomer shabbat, (which means you keep the tradition and don't use electricity or fire or anything), but we're not, we're secular, so it's ok :)

Yeah, if you were I guess there wouldn't still be labels on the apples either? (same principle as the toilet paper thing?).

Still, it looks neat and simple. Uncluttered and easy to deal with.

If we were, i wouldn't be taking photographs of stuff on shabbat morning :)

what toilet paper thing?

toiletpaper

Date: 2005-03-05 07:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonstart.livejournal.com
ripping toilet paper pre-shabbat, so you're not tearing... although at camp we had shabbos toilet paper, but then we'd get candy and ice cream and could rip that open, as long as we weren't tearing letters on the labels...
i love how jews get around rules and make up so many funny ones that really don't make sense even when they do in an odd way...

anyway, the laptop was the whole point of the photo--
there's the ancient tradition (candlesticks, white tablecloth), and new technology, on the same table.

and I had noticed.

but somehow it doesn't really look out of place.

fire

From: [identity profile] moonstart.livejournal.com
you can light candles pre-shabbat, and you can also light a candle from another candle that was already lit... just not strike a match, because you're creating fire from nothing...

actually, you can't light a candle from another candle on shabbat, only in holydays, and only to make food (cook). or at least that was the primary intention, nowdays it's a comfort for the religious smokers.

you light the candles on shabbat eve, to mark the entrance of the sabbath.

awesomeness

love the photo. somehow it looks like a painting you'd see in a museum, with the bestest title... it's kewl, and it's kewl that it does really look like a typical "traditional american" household saturday morning... (traditional being mostly reform, i think that's how they describe most american jews, as mostly reform, or whatever)
nice shot. from an artistic view, it rocks. can we trade?

I'll need a bit more specs, and also we'll have to come up with a way for you to pay for it through me, but it should work out.

that's my house at 3am, maybe. My parents are dati. to use the compy on shabbos i have to wait till they're totally passed out, and even then it's quiet time.

oh, being secular in an orthodox house. the joys.
but i still laughed at your picture. cuz in israel, yea...i mean come on. "Bicycle Day"????

It fucking pissee me off that Michael Jackson usurped and ruined some cool looks. Things like pale white skin with black hair, and the fedora thing.

Funny thing though...I don't see the bastard at all in your icon.

It looks more to me like Terrence Trent D'arby if it looks like anyone but you.

kind of an urban funk jazz sort of thing. Kind of Pop-ee as well. There are some videos you can download at his site http://www.sanandapromotion.com/

seems he's found some new path and changed his name to Sananda Maitreya.

if you download a video, "Wishing Well" was his big US hit. I don't much care for the type of music that he does/did, but the fucker got a great voice.
