(no subject)

Sabbath morning in the modern jewish household.

A laptop is okay???

[identity profile] hillbillie.livejournal.com 2005-03-05 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm.

Well it all certainly looks peaceful and restful and VERY NEAT AND ORGANIZED AND CLEAN, crist almighty.

I guess I've no jewish ancestry after all; I'm too much of a slob for it.
*sigh*

But seriously:
yay sunflowers!
and wooden chairs!

And cool candlesticks :)

Thank you very much for sharing this.

And I notice what looks like sunny daylight..[*anguished cry* reaches-out-toward-picture]

You lucky.
We haven't really seen the sun in a month.

[coughs up mildew]

nah, i'm a slob.
a laptop isn't ok if you're a shomer shabbat, (which means you keep the tradition and don't use electricity or fire or anything), but we're not, we're secular, so it's ok :)

Yeah, if you were I guess there wouldn't still be labels on the apples either? (same principle as the toilet paper thing?).

Still, it looks neat and simple. Uncluttered and easy to deal with.

If we were, i wouldn't be taking photographs of stuff on shabbat morning :)

what toilet paper thing?

toiletpaper

ripping toilet paper pre-shabbat, so you're not tearing... although at camp we had shabbos toilet paper, but then we'd get candy and ice cream and could rip that open, as long as we weren't tearing letters on the labels...
i love how jews get around rules and make up so many funny ones that really don't make sense even when they do in an odd way...

anyway, the laptop was the whole point of the photo--
there's the ancient tradition (candlesticks, white tablecloth), and new technology, on the same table.

yeah, that is cool :)

and I had noticed.

but somehow it doesn't really look out of place.

But....candles have fire..?

fire

you can light candles pre-shabbat, and you can also light a candle from another candle that was already lit... just not strike a match, because you're creating fire from nothing...

Interesting.

Thank you

actually, you can't light a candle from another candle on shabbat, only in holydays, and only to make food (cook). or at least that was the primary intention, nowdays it's a comfort for the religious smokers.

you light the candles on shabbat eve, to mark the entrance of the sabbath.
