i didnt realize that it was such an old tradition! maybe it dates back to before the destruction of teh 2nd Temple then...b/c the jews from yemen werent affected by the spanish inquisition.

not talking about the inquisition
most of the jews were banished from spain a few hundred years before the inquistion, and fled to the rest of europe, yemen, and north africa.
